Your Eyes Are Telling You Something: A Guide to Common Eye Conditions
Most people only think about their eye health when something goes wrong. By then, conditions that were entirely preventable β or easily managed in their early stages β have progressed significantly. At Nile International Hospital, our ophthalmology unit sees patients every week who could have preserved more of their vision with earlier intervention. Cataracts are the most common cause of blindness in Uganda. They develop slowly, causing the lens of the eye to cloud over, leading to blurry vision, glare sensitivity, and eventually significant visual impairment. Cataracts are completely treatable with surgery β a short, safe procedure that restores clear vision. If you notice your vision becoming progressively misty or dull, do not delay a review. Glaucoma is often called the "silent thief of sight" because it causes no pain and no symptoms in its early stages. By the time patients notice vision loss, the damage is often permanent. Glaucoma is caused by elevated pressure inside the eye that damages the optic nerve. Regular eye pressure checks β a simple, painless test β can detect it early. We recommend everyone over 40 have a glaucoma screening at least every two years. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels inside the eye. Patients with poorly controlled blood sugar are at highest risk. It can cause blindness if untreated, but with regular eye examinations and good diabetic control, the risk is dramatically reduced. All diabetic patients should have an annual dilated eye examination. If you are experiencing blurred vision, floaters, flashes of light, eye pain, redness, or any sudden change in your vision, please do not wait. Our ophthalmology unit offers full eye examinations, glaucoma screening, diabetic eye assessments, and cataract consultations. Book your appointment at +256 706 202590.

Nile International Hospital was founded on a single belief: that people in Eastern Uganda deserve the same quality of specialist healthcare available in the world's leading medical centres β without having to travel to Kampala or abroad to get it. Today, our team includes consultant specialists in neurosurgery, cardiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, internal medicine, urology, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and general surgery. Many of our doctors trained in the UK, Jordan, Egypt, India, and across the Gulf β and they have chosen to bring that expertise directly to Jinja. Our facility on Nalufenya Road is equipped with modern diagnostic imaging, a fully operational theatre suite, a 24-hour emergency department with ambulance dispatch, and an expanding outpatient wing. We accept walk-in patients every weekday and offer appointments for specialist consultations. If you or a family member need specialist care, you do not need a referral to visit us. Understanding Your Health Insurance at NIH
Navigating health insurance can feel complicated, but at Nile International Hospital we have made it as straightforward as possible. We are currently partnered with eight major insurance providers β AAR Insurance, ICEA Lion, Jubilee Health Insurance, APA Insurance, Resolution Insurance, MedU Assurance, Sanlam Uganda, and Prudential Uganda. If you hold a policy with any of these providers, your consultations, investigations, procedures, and admissions at NIH can be billed directly to your insurer. You do not need to pay out of pocket and claim back later. When you arrive, simply present your insurance card and national ID at our reception desk. Our insurance team will handle the pre-authorisation process on your behalf. For complex procedures, we recommend calling ahead so we can confirm cover before your appointment. Our insurance desk is managed by Namwase Cloria, our Claims Manager, and is open Monday to Friday. For any questions about your cover, call +256 706 202590 or visit us on the ground floor of the outpatient building.
Five Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore
As a general surgeon at Nile International Hospital, I see patients every week who wish they had come in sooner. Many serious conditions are highly treatable when caught early β but become significantly harder to manage when ignored for weeks or months. Chest pain or pressure, especially if it radiates to the jaw, left arm, or back. This can indicate a heart attack. Do not wait β call for help immediately. Sudden severe headache described as "the worst headache of my life." This can be a sign of a brain bleed or aneurysm. It is a medical emergency. Unexplained weight loss of more than 5kg over a few months without dieting. This is one of the most common early signs of cancer and warrants investigation. Blood in your urine, stool, or when coughing. While not always serious, blood where it should not be always requires a proper assessment. A lump anywhere on the body that is new, growing, or painless. Painless lumps are often more concerning than painful ones. None of these symptoms guarantee a serious diagnosis β but all of them deserve a proper evaluation. Our emergency and outpatient departments are open seven days a week. If in doubt, come in. Call +256 706 202590.
